ABOUT US

The addition of Kawartha Prop Repair in 1980 added a significant dimension to the meaning of "Full Service Marina" for Buckhorn Yacht Harbour Ltd. Established in the early 1960s by Orville Smith, the once one man shop is now known as Kawartha Propeller with a staff of 19 employees and 9 pickup and delivery circuits across Ontario. We travel weekly to service and supply propellers, lower units, and inboard hardware to over 250 marinas and individual boaters alike.

The precision and quality of repair that goes into each and every item has led to an ever-growing reputation that is generously supported by word of mouth. Repairs will match or exceed original performance levels, as is so often mentioned by our satisfied customers. It is this skill and reputation that has contributed to our ranking as Canada’s leading propeller repair facility; a family owned and operated business spanning three generations.

The Answers You Need

FAQ

HOW DO I FIND OUT WHICH PROPELLER IS RECOMMENDED FOR MY BOAT?

There are a few pieces of information we need to to determine a proper selection. Once we have all this accurate information, a proper calculation can be made to determine your propeller. Complete the ‘Help Me Select a Propeller’ form here to find out what we recommend for your boat.

IS THERE A PROPELLER THAT WILL PERFORM BETTER ON MY BOAT?

Depending on the type of boating you do, there may be a propeller that is more suited to help you reach your boating goals. To determine if your existing propeller is your best option, complete the ‘Improve My Performance - Outboard / Sterndrive’ form here, or the ‘Improve My Performance - Inboard’ form here.

WHAT WILL A STAINLESS STEEL PROPELLER DO FOR MY BOAT?

A stainless prop will typically give you the best possible performance that your boat was designed to offer. You will often see a mile(s) per hour improvement at mid-range and wide open throttle. That would also mean an improvement in fuel efficiency overall.

HOW BADLY DAMAGED CAN MY PROP / LOWER UNIT BE BEFORE I NEED TO FIX IT?

Any damage to a propeller’s blades, whether bent or actual material missing, can and will affect your overall performance. A prop in a damaged state is unbalanced and therefore, over time, lower unit bearings will wear, seals can fail, oil can be lost, and water ingested resulting in potential major damage to your unit. Keep in mind that if damage is minor, repair cost will be priced according to the extent of damage, making it practical to repair.

HOW LONG CAN I EXPECT MY REPAIRS TO TAKE?

We understand that the boating season is short and vacation time is precious! We provide excellent turnaround times and you can expect your repairs to be completed within one week or less. We make it a priority to meet any deadlines and get our customers back out on the water as soon as possible. Remember, you should always carry a spare propeller because “the only time you require a spare is when you’re boating!”

WHAT TYPES AND SIZES OF PROPELLERS CAN YOU REPAIR?

We specialize in repairing aluminum, stainless steel, steel, bronze, and nickel bronze (nibral) propellers. With the use of our Prop Eye Laser Scanning and propeller repair equipment, we can blueprint and repair props to a high tolerance from as small as 10 inches to as large as 62 inches in diameter.

I NEED MY PROPELLER REPAIRED, BUT I’M UNABLE TRAVEL TO YOUR LOCATION. WHAT ARE MY OPTIONS?

If you cannot visit us in person, you can drop off your items at one of our marina dealers located nearest you. Call or email us today to find out your closest dealer or options for pickup and delivery.

What Our Customers Say

David A. Gray

Just wanted to drop you a line and let you know that the double cupping that you put on the prop last week worked great. There is no more cavitation at full throttle with a RPM of 5200 and a top speed of 46 MPH. You really know your stuff.

Chuck D

John, just thought I’d let you know that the 24 Raker you worked for me really made a difference. I’ve picked up 10 mph and my gas mileage has improved substantially.

Dave M

John. Just a note to say thank-you for an incredible job done on the repair of my lower unit/prop. The end result looks terrific and was done in a very timely manner. That kind of service is not always found in the marine industry.

Alex G

Thanks ever so much for your hospitality last week. I am ever so impressed by your facility and the hospitality. You made a very unpleasant accident to my boat very bearable. All the staff and residents were so kind to us.

Gord G

While touring the Rideau system, I unfortunately hit a shoal, and envisioned the loss of a week of summer holidays and thousands of dollars. We called you and asked if an emergency prop repair was even likely due to the short notice issues. The answer was YES! My wife and I borrowed a vehicle and drive to Buckhorn. John met us promptly on our arrival and he took our 4 props into the shop for an evaluation. John had multiple jobs on the go and it was 35 degrees outside. I imagined the props wouldn’t be finished on time or would be delayed until the next day. We ended up back at the shop 15 minutes earlier than expected. To our amazement John met us outside, handed me the 4 repaired props, and wished us all the best. Both my wife and I were very impressed in the level of service and commitment by John and the entire staff. While telling this story to a fellow boater I found out he had a similar problem and that it was the Fuderer’s that came to the rescue! Providing your excellent service is not isolated or sporadic, but a way you do business. Thanks a million!

Captain: Bob A, South Portland, Maine

After an unscheduled grounding at Lock 15, we limped to this superb marina for prop and hull repair. I cannot overemphasize the professionally competent service provided by Jamie, who turned our mangled prop into a piece of art in 2 days. We stayed a week and left with regrets we had to be on our way.

Charlie Johnston

Hooked me up with a new prop after I hit a rock. Excellent service and great prices.
